Spain vs Portugal : the image of both countries and its evolution in times of crisis

This paper addresses the issue of how far the prolonged current crisis is damaging the image of Portugal and Spain, being this factor of undoubtedly importance in a global economy, that is, in a global competition to attract investment, tourists ... to sell, in short. Thus, the available data reveal, in general, the deterioration of the image that both countries have suffered in recent years. It is clear that the image projected outside by a country affects when doing business internationally, to the extent that it transmits certain values and reputation. Accordingly, in terms of methodology, the main findings of a number of studies that have been made in this regard have been extracted, based on secondary data; although some of them are not strictly indicators of image, they do have an influence on it. Finally, we reflect on the potential impact on trade relations between the two countries. Keywords: Country brand, Spain, Portugal, foreign trade

The new face of the tourism industry under a circular economy

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the evolution of the tourism ecosystem within a circular economy, considering relevant factors that influence the transition towards the circular economy model. Design/methodology/approach – This reflection is carried out from an organisational perspective and employs a strategic management approach combined with a neo-institutional theoretical lens. Findings – Four scenarios are identified after selecting several pertinent internal and external dimensions, which will help to understand the form and pace of the expected transition towards a tourism circular economy. Research limitations/implications – Other variables could have been used for the scenario creation aim, which can be deemed a limitation. Practical implications – Tourism operators can position themselves within this framework to analyse their conditions in order to address this unavoidable strategic change. Originality/value – To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first academic work written in this line of researc

De la participación a la gestión del conocimiento y del capital intelectual: reflexiones en torno a la empresa cooperativa

Once the bases have been set with regard to the new orientations currently being taken company management, among which stand out the protagonism of intangible resources as sources of sustainable competitive advantage and the peremptory necessity to carry out a correct management of the intelectual capital of an organisation, this work deals with the role of participation as a facilitator of knowledge management within a company. All of these contributions are transferred to the specific case of the co-operative society, relating them with their idiosyncratic singularities and reflecting on their capacity of potential and applicability in this type of company.Co-operativism, participation, knowledge, intellectual capital, business management.

The sources of competitive advantage in cooperative enterprises have received much less attention from the academic community than those in conventional capitalist companies. Moreover, in this area of research (the competitive advantage in cooperatives), Information Technologies play an increasingly important role. This paper therefore aims to study the link between (cooperative) ownership structure and the competitive advantages obtained from the provision and effective use of such technologies, from the point of view of Transaction Cost Theory.Cooperative, Competitive Strategy, Competitive Advantage, Information Technologies.

An institutional approach to the environmental management systems of golf courses in Andalusia

    Get PDF
In many tourist destinations, such as Andalusia in Spain, the number of golf courses has increased exponentially, which has generated a public debate about how to reconcile economic development and respect for the natural environment. This paper analyzes its highly institutionalized context - and the main practices that derive from it - and test empirically, in a sample of golf courses located in Andalusia, the relationships between these practices with its corresponding coercive, normative and mimetic mechanisms. Finally, its relationship with the performance of these organizations is established, testing if a direct or indirect relationship, through the search for legitimacy, exists, as suggested by the Institutional Theory

El entorno institucional de carácter medioambiental de los campos de golf andaluces: un análisis factorial

The main aim of this paper is the definition of the institutional environment in which Andalusian golf courses operate. A factor analysis has allowed us to identify the three pressures proposed by the Institutional Theory, which are sources of isomorphism in organizations. In particular, we have linked this kind of pressures to the environmental performance of golf courses in Andalusia, contributing to the debate in this region as a result of the increasing number of such facilities.

In this eminently empirical paper, of an exploratory and descriptive nature, a package of indicators is proposed by which to measure the performance of an agricultural co-operative, based on which we try to find out the degree of importance accorded or which should be accorded to these indicators, in both absolute and relative terms, among a sample of sixteen agricultural co-operatives of Huelva province, and another sixteen from Jaén province (thirty two in all). This investigation is carried out through a questionnaire completed by the managing directors of the aforesaid co-operatives.Agricultural co-operatives, Performance, Excellence.
